UNIVERSITY DON TO REKINDLE READING CULTURE BY CLINCHING GWR AWARD
A lecturer in the University of Uyo; Mr. Ekemini Effiong has disclosed his readiness to ensure reading culture is rejuvenated in the country; particularly amongt students in Akwa Ibom State. This he said could be achieved by surpassing the current Guinness World Record for the longest reading marathon.
Speaking to newsmen in Uyo on Saturday, the Ibiono Ibom born lecturer said he is aiming to read for 288 hours to beat previous records. He noted that it is worrisome to realise that the reading culture in Nigeria has drastically declined, adding that his quest to clinch the Guinness World Record in reading is part of the campaign to further inspire students and citizens of Akwa Ibom State to improve reading culture.
Effiong used the opportunity to appeal for support from the Governor of Akwa Ibom State; Pastor Umo Eno, whom he described as a youth friendly Governor. He also requested for assistance from corporate organisations and spirited individuals to lend their support towards achieving this lofty dream.
The 32 year old contestant assured all that he is mentally and physically ready for the contest, stating that having gotten the approval of Guinness World Record (GWR) for the Readathon attempt, he submitted a list of books to be read and has the blessings of the world record body to go ahead with the attempt which is scheduled to hold on the 24th Day of May, 2024.

Also speaking on the GWR attempt, the Chief Programme Director of the Readathon Team and a Senior Lecuturer in the Department of Theatre Arts - University of Uyo; Prof. Effiong Johnson expressed his excitement and belief in the capacity of Mr. Ekemini Effiong, adding that he is honoured and grateful to be part of the team.
Prof. Johnson who described Ekemini Effiong as a very studious and rare breed, said he was privileged to tutor him while studying for his first degree in the University and that he graduated as the first person to bag a First Class from the Department of Theatre Arts since its establishment 25 years ago, adding that he has no doubt the GWR attempt would be a success and called for support from all and sundry.
